Sheff Wed Confronts Major Issues, Says Football Regulator

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The team's persistent issues represent a a "major concern" and the new football authority is looking to gain the ability to look into club affairs in comparable cases, the recently named head the official has announced.

Through a comprehensive talk, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, voiced concern towards Wednesday's fanbase.

Kogan met with four fan organizations representing the Championship side recently.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club failing to pay players on time on five separate occasions, including in last month.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," Kogan told.

"The club represents one of the iconic names for the English game and this week we have met fan representatives.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will allow us to have Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs submitted for our review if they warrant scrutiny and addressed."

Financial Struggles and Ownership Situation

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri suggested earlier this year he would be willing to sell up at Hillsborough, but he has failed to complete a sale with potential new owners.

Missed wage deadlines on time in March and May resulted in restrictions being imposed by the league officials in summer, stopping Wednesday from completing any recruitment activities for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in August.

Authority's Position

The chairman stated: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the supporters of Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has been part of their lives in multiple situations.

"I fully appreciate Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for each organization that over recent decades have faced collapse, or been close to going to the wall, for factors unrelated to the supporters."

Inquired if the authority might compel an owner to sell a club if they are judged inappropriate, the regulator answered: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we collect the information and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But Kogan stressed that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be treated as a "last resort" and the oversight body would choose to work with them.

"The last thing what we want to do is commence engagement with an particular organization, an specific proprietor, without being able to work with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the proprietor's dealing with," the chairman stated.

"However, realistically, when you examine the past of the game, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been particular chairmen, not many, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the manner they have operated their teams and eventually don't wish to take responsibility for the future."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

Kogan met with delegates from multiple organizations to explain the responsibilities of the regulator on Wednesday and insisted it was a "proactive meeting" with a "significant participation" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"The role holds considerable importance, because should mistakes occur, if the world of football gets it wrong, the extraordinary progress that's been made necessary will vanish swiftly," the chairman stated.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the context of the English game is a major achievement - we need to continue the progress.

"There's an enormous amount of money coming into football and has been channeled for the last 20 or 25 years, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on risk and of course, of the coming seasons."

Premier League Concerns

Elite division representatives objected to the establishment of an oversight body because of concerns about detrimental effects on the elite division's competitive balance, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the success and growth as an commercial operation of the elite league.

"As someone who appreciates the concern of undermining the top flight as an elite competition of this country. But concurrently, if you consult with top flight officials after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

The regulator remains subject to a "comprehensive investigation" by the official appointments authority after he acknowledged providing funds to the opposition group in 2020.

The official provided financial support for Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the government leader.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I am presently disconnected from any sort of politics."
